Refurbishment at Boyden 2001/2002:
The Boyden 1.52m telescope was refurbished and a new CCD camera system was installed at a total cost of R1.78 million.
Donation of surface science equipment from Max Plank Institute 2002:
The department received a donation of a SAM and XPS research apparatus from the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart, Germany. The department had to compete against other departments and institutes worldwide for the honours. Fortunatly the departments proposal was the best!! Bought new this equipment would cost more than R10 million.
